Pond Puddings and Sussex Smokies,
an exploration of Sussex’s food and drink over the centuries.
Kevin Newman’s talk is based on his latest book, which came out last year. Kevin will treat us to a confection of funny food stories and alcoholic aspects of the county’s past from the earliest days of the Ancient Britons, via the Romans and why the Normans were able to win the Battle of Hastings (partly due to the Saxons having drunk too much booze the night before). So, it could be argued drink has played a huge part in changing the country’s history – not least the establishment of venerable Harvey’s brewery in Lewes in 1790, and still going strong today.
As well as light-hearted exploration of all of Sussex’s culinary, drinking, distilling and dining locations together with the characters who make, sow, grow and deliver our food and drink to us, we will be providing some tasters of local edibles and beverages. Donations are requested to cover costs.
Entrance: Members £1.50; Visitors £4
